D'Angelico Donates Guitars to U.S. Navy U.S. Soldiers in Times of War Normally find a respite in the quiet moments between fighting. Rarely, however, do they find opportunities to do the things that seem “normal” or “routine” to us back on the home front. That is why D’Angelico Guitars of America recently outfitted a band of Navy musician stationed in Afghanistan, known as the FUBAR Fighters, with guitars, strings, picks & all the gear necessary to swing. When asked how the idea to sponsor a small band of soldiers came up, D’Angelico Director of Sales
soldiers came up, D’Angelico Director of Sales Marc A. Tappan said simpy, “They asked". “We all appreciate everything that our soldiers & sailors do every day over there. It is an honor for us to be able to show them this small thank you for everything they’ve done and continue to do for our country.”
Apparently shipping guitars to a war zone isn’t easy. Tappan says, “None of the major parcel service companies would deliver to an APO address, & our shipping boxes are too big for the US Postal service to deliver normally.” Thankfully though, the staff at the Colts Neck, NJ Post Office went out of their way to accommodate the special delivery and make sure that the instruments & gear were safely shipped to Afghanistan.
SMSgt John Gardner of the U.S. Navy and member of the FUBAR Fighters assures us that anytime the band is putting on a performance for their fellow troops, there will be seats available for anyone from the D’Angelico Guitars staff to come & listen.

New Direction Home
“A lot of people think D’Angelico went out of business,”said Marc Tappan, newly appointed Director of Sales for D’Angelico Guitars of America, “I don’t want the legacy of these great instruments to end anytime soon.” In an inter- view given yesterday Mr. Tappan stressed his concerns & dedication to the project of revitalizing the company’s status & standing with our customers & the industry.“It was great to have the opportunity to come in & spend time as a consultant here. I got a chance to see how things worked in the office & distribution center, how customer issues were being handled & I think we have the foundation for a really great company. I’m just excited to be able to bring my years of experience & service to a company with such a wonderful history. I want to grow this company like one of my own children. Growing it strong & successful with a focus on integrity & service. I couldn’t have dreamed of a better place to be.”

D'Angelico on the Road
Premier Guitar Festivals kicked off its first ever Guitar Festival with exhibits, performances and workshops at Boston’s Bayside Expo Center. Players ranging from young novices to famous rockers were jamming at the exhibits and workshops all weekend long. Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton took a break from his busy tour schedule and visited the festival knowing “there’s something here (he) needs to buy.”
As thousands of guitar enthusiasts from Maine to Michigan strolled through the aisles of displays & exhibitors throughout the weekend, they would all stop & stare at the overwhelming beauty of the D’Angelico guitars. Again & again the fine instruments were remarked upon as, “The most beautiful guitars in here.” or “Truly works of art.”
The best part about it for me was how just about everyone who were struck with awe at the guitar’s beauty was a little scared to play them, almost as if there was this invisible velvet rope separating the guitars from the people. When someone did actually sit down & play a D’Angelico, they were not only amazed by how great they feel & sound, but also at how affordable they are. All weekend long people would assume that our guitars carried a price tag between five & ten thousand dollars. All weekend long we could see the Christmas lists being written in their heads as we showed them the real price tags.
We’re looking forward to the Jazz Improv Live! Show in New York City (October 25th-28th) & future Premier Guitar Festivals. We had a great time, met a ton of really interesting people & can’t wait to do it again. So keep an eye out for us on the road. If you see us, say Hi.

Have you checked out these new books from CenterStream Publishing?
DGA Staff review the 2 new offerings of D’Angelico legacy & the history of bebop guitar.
2 new guitar books from CenterStream Publishing
I’ve been fortunate enough to receive a copy of the 2 new books from Ron Middlebrook & CenterStream Publishing, which really spotlight the D’Angelico legacy. The first, D’Angelico: Master Guitar Builder. What’s in a Name? by Frank W/M Green, is quite an intimate look at the world of D’Angelico from the eyes of a fan. The book is more than just a recap of John D’Angelico’s biography. In fact it kind of takes for granted the fact that readers of this book have already gained their own intimate appreciation of the man & his art by starting off with a string of personal stories by friends of the man himself. What’s in a name goes on to explore the passing of the torch to Bob Benedetto as well as stories of repairs & trips to “the shop”. The book is adorned with some great pictures of equisite guitars & proud owners. A definite joy for the D’A fan.
The second book Ron sent me was a compelling look into the theory for Jazz guitar in the style Charlie Parker. Bebop Guitar is a hefty practice book for the advanced guitarist looking for ways to enhance his or her playing. A look at chord voicing, scales & scale fragments to help you play that Bird-like style of Jazz. The accompanying CD is clear. You can check out more on both books at CenterStream’s own website: www.centerstream-usa.com

New Model Unveiled
Finally, The EXS-1 is ready for the public. We've designed a 16" hollow-body with a floating pickup to allow the smaller body to resonate to its fullest potential without impedance by those pesky, tone-stealing mounted pickups.
The new EXS-1 sings with a voice of vintage, short scale tone that brings up images of gypsy jazz being played near a campfire. The EXS-1 is a D'Angelico & like all D'Angelico guitars it is appointed with the most strikingly beautiful details to make it stand out from the crowd. A Solid Ebony fingerboard, adorned with Mother-of-Pearl/Abalone split-block inlay, lays upon a neck made of solid Maple & Walnut. The Spruce top & Maple body are constructed of our traditional 5-ply laminate material to keep your D'Angelico strong yet flexible. Leaving the body free to resonate to its fullest extent & create rich, full tones. A Kent Armstrong floating minibucker w/ adjustable pole-pieces is mounted onto the pickguard for when you want to plug in & play.
Those of us who were waiting for a model that incorporated the great playability & comfort of the EXS-1DH into a guitar that could sound as big acoustically as a larger body will have to wait no more. Introducing, the EXS-1.
